I considered myself a good writer beforehand, but failed the ALST the first time I took it. Then I purchased the book and it started making sense. I saw the things I did incorrectly the first time. The ALST is a daunting test that requires you to read, comprehend and analyze Passages and then to write three different essays.  Many people are unaware that different types essays have different requirements.  50% of the score on each essay is based on the structure of the essay.
